Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
